How It Works

1. Get the ATR

Calculate or pull the Average True Range for your timeframe from your charting platform. ATR measures typical price movement over N periods.

2. Apply the Multiplier

Multiply the ATR by your chosen factor (typically 1.5–3×). This creates a buffer zone that accounts for normal volatility fluctuations.

3. Set & Trail

Place your stop below (long) or above (short) entry by the calculated distance. As price moves in your favor, trail the stop up or down by the same ATR offset.

What is ATR?

Average True Range (ATR) is a technical indicator developed by J. Welles Wilder Jr. in 1978 that measures market volatility. Unlike most indicators, ATR does not indicate price direction — only the magnitude of price movement.

The "True Range" for each period is calculated as the greatest of:

  • Current High − Current Low
  • |Current High − Previous Close|
  • |Current Low − Previous Close|

The ATR is then the moving average (typically 14 periods) of these True Range values. A higher ATR means higher volatility; a lower ATR means quieter markets.

Key Properties

Directionally Neutral

ATR measures volatility regardless of whether price is trending up or down.

Timeframe Flexible

Works on any chart — 1-minute, daily, weekly — just adjust the ATR period accordingly.

Self-Adjusting

Automatically widens in volatile markets and tightens in quiet ones — no manual recalculation needed.

Absolute Value

Always positive and expressed in the same currency/units as the price — easy to interpret.

When to Use ATR Trailing Stops

Trending Markets

ATR stops excel in strong trends where you want to stay in the trade while the momentum lasts. The adaptive buffer avoids premature exits during normal pullbacks.

Swing Trading

Ideal for multi-day or multi-week positions where you need a stop that gives the trade room to breathe overnight and across sessions without constant manual adjustment.

Portfolio Protection

Use ATR stops across a portfolio to maintain consistent risk exposure. Each position gets a stop calibrated to its own volatility profile rather than a one-size-fits-all percentage.

Volatility Breakouts

When trading breakouts, ATR stops help you ride the initial impulse. As volatility expands post-breakout, your stop widens proportionally to absorb the increased noise.

Risk Considerations

No stop guarantees execution at your price. In fast-moving or gapping markets, your stop may be filled significantly worse than the calculated level (slippage). ATR stops are no exception to this fundamental risk.

ATR is a lagging indicator. It reflects past volatility, not future volatility. If market conditions change rapidly — such as during news events or regime shifts — the ATR value may be stale and your stop too tight or too wide.

Multipliers are context-dependent. A 2× multiplier may be appropriate for daily charts on liquid stocks but too tight for volatile crypto or too wide for intraday forex. Always test with historical data for your specific instrument and timeframe.

ATR stops do not replace position sizing. Use this calculator to determine your stop level, then calculate your position size based on your maximum risk per trade to ensure proper risk management.
